Cutting plastic to zero in the school canteen

I propose adding a 5 TL deposit to every plastic bottle sold in the cafeteria. Students who return the bottles get their money back on their cafeteria card. For the first month, the school cooperative will set aside a fund of 2,000 TL; the collected bottles will be given to a recycling company, and the proceeds will go back into the fund. This way, the system will be self-financing starting in the second month. We’ll use the barcode data from the cafeteria cash register for tracking: the ratio of bottles sold to bottles returned will be posted on the weekly bulletin board.

The fastest way to reduce plastic is to eliminate the need for it. I suggest installing filtered water dispensers on all three floors of the school and distributing water bottles with the school logo to 9th graders during registration week. The cost could be covered by a local sponsor; in exchange, the company’s logo would appear on the water fountains. Raising the price of bottled water in the cafeteria, rather than eliminating its sale entirely, encourages behavioral change without forcing it. Our goal is a 40% reduction in the number of bottles sold by the end of the first semester.

The cafeteria at our school already sells glass bottles, so this situation doesn't really apply to us. Still, I'll bring up the idea of a deposit with our principal.
